Scientists Are Preparing To Drill Into The Site Of The Impact That Killed Off The Dinosaurs

This month, in the Gulf of Mexico, a drilling site will be constructed. Typically, these sites are built for oil extraction, but this one is for a more valiant pursuit. Scientists plan to drill into the site, known as the Chicxulub crater, where 66 million years ago an asteroid impacted and killed off the dinosaurs and many other life forms on Earth. The goal is to discover rock cores that will potentially give insights into how life rebounded after such a devastating event. They believe the crater could have been a breeding ground for microbial life that then evolved into the life forms of today.  Continue reading →

NASA Admits There’s ‘A Chance’ That Asteroid 2013 TX68 Could Smash Into Earth

NASA has dramatically changed its mind about the risks posed by asteroid 2013 TX68 , a 100ft-wide rock which is currently heading towards Earth. It said there was “a chance” it could plough into our planet next year when it makes another flyby. However, we are glad to report that NASA thinks the odds of a collision on September 28, 2017, are “no more than 1-in-250-million”. If it did hit the planet, the asteroid would probably explode in the atmosphere, unleashing as much energy as a powerful nuclear bomb and wiping out anything unlucky enough to be beneath it. “The possibilities of collision on any of the three future flyby dates are far too small to be of any real concern,” said Paul Chodas, manager of NASA’s Center for near earth orbit studies . “I fully expect any future observations to reduce the probability even more.”  Continue reading →

Braving a funding ban put in place by America’s top health agency, some U.S. research centers are moving ahead with attempts to grow human tissue inside pigs and sheep with the goal of creating hearts, livers, or other organs needed for transplants.

Based on interviews with three teams, two in California and one in Minnesota, MIT Technology Review estimates that about 20 pregnancies of pig-human or sheep-human chimeras have been established during the last 12 months in the U.S., though so far no scientific paper describing the work has been published, and none of the animals were brought to term.  Continue reading →

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC ), a branch of the World Health Organization, released a report on October 26, 2015 that evaluated the carcinogenic potential of processed and red meat.

After delving into the mounting scientific literature exploring the correlation between cancer and diet, a group of experts derived from 10 different countries assembled by the IARC Monographs Programme classified processed meats as “carcinogenic to humans.” Such meat has now been  placed in the highest possible category, group 1 out of 5 — the same category as tobacco, alcohol, arsenic, and asbestos.  Continue reading →

Silk Road heroin dealer who helped convict Ulbricht will serve 2.5 years

Michael Duch, who sold heroin on the Silk Road and later testified at the trial of the site’s founder Ross Ulbricht, was sentenced today to two-and-a-half years in prison, according to Reuters.

Duch never interacted with Ulbricht, who went by the Dread Pirate Roberts on the site. His testimony in February was used by prosecutors to demonstrate that Silk Road created additional dealers and users. Duch, whose online moniker was “deezletime,” said he started selling drugs to support his own dope habit, which at its peak was costing him $200 to $300 per day.

Monsanto Linked to Israel’s Illegal Use of White Phosphorous in Gaza War

Colombia has announced that it will stop using Monsanto's controversial herbicide glyphosate - the active ingredient in its bestselling RoundUp - on illicit coca crops as part of state efforts to eradicate the plants.Agribusiness giant Monsanto - best known for their genetically modified soybeans and “probably carcinogenic” herbicide - has supplied the US government with white phosphorous used in incendiary weapons for at least 20 years, and some of that made its way to Israel for use in Operation Cast Lead.

The blog Current Events Inquiry dug into some heavily redacted documents posted in 2012 on the US Federal Business Opportunities (FBO) website, to discover that Monsanto was the  purveyor of white phosphorous to the US, and subsequently Israel, including during Operation Cast Lead, which resulted in heavy casualties among Palestinians in Gaza in 2008 and 2009.

Exposure to common household pesticide ‘TRIPLES boys’ risk of ADHD’, experts warn

A pesticide found in common household products has been found to triple a boy’s risk of being diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, scientists have warned.

Symptoms of the condition, notably hyperactivity and impulsivity, were found to be associated with exposure to pyrethroid pesticides, the US researchers found.

The ingredient is found in many common insecticides and some insect repellents.

Experts, led by those at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, noted the link was stronger in boys than in girls.
